A man died Monday evening after jumping off the Fred Hartman Bridge in La Porte, police said.

Authorities said a passerby called 911 to report the jumper around 6:30 p.m. Monday evening. Police responded to the area and found the man dead, according to La Porte Police Department Sgt. Bennie Boles.

The bridge does not have any special fencing to prevent pedestrians from climbing over the guardrail, Boles said.

REWARD: $5K reward offered for help finding two drivers hit, killed motorcyclist

"It's not designed for pedestrian traffic at all," Boles said. "There are no fences."

The bridge is normally patrolled by Harris County Precinct 8 Constable's Office, Boles said, but his department is normally on scene quickly because of La Porte's proximity to the bridge's south entrance.

There are a few people who successfully jump off the bridge each year, Boles said. However, La Porte police officers are trained in crisis intervention and have successfully talked people out of jumping, Boles said.


Authorities with the Port of Houston Authority and Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences are also assisting in the investigation.

At its peak, the bridge is about 440 feet above the water, although authorities did not say from where on the bridge the man jumped.

His identity was not immediately available.
