"It was great news to us. We feel like it should have happened since day one, but it's a step in the right direction and we're pleased with the outcome," said Melissa Hernandez, a cousin of the victim, John Hernandez.
Hernandez died after he was held in a chokehold by Thompson's husband, Terry. She was off-duty and arrived after the confrontation started, as documented on security and cell phone video.
Relatives of Hernandez along with community activists welcomed news of Thompson's firing in a Friday evening news conference organized by the immigration rights organization FIEL and held just hours after Thompson learned her fate with the department.
"They called her in, wouldn't tell her what the meeting was about and told her she was fired," said Greg Cagle, Thompson's criminal defense attorney.
Her termination letter reads, "Clearly you failed to take proper police action and order your husband to immediately stop his actions [chokehold] against Mr. Hernandez."
